I like helping students develop critical thinking and give them the tools to develop their curiosity and work on their speaking so they are able to communicate better. I have worked teaching online for 4 years for a language school and also freelance. My students describe me as patient, easygoing and knowledgeable. Expect to speak a lot during my classes, learn grammar, vocabulary, listening and writing and play some games!

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak Spanish because it's my native language, I grew up in Mexico and in the U.S. In the other hand, English is a language that I learned ever since I was in kindergarten. I started speaking it fluently at 7 years old, since I moved to the U.S. at an early age. Besides that, I have had wonderful Spanish and English teachers that helped me develop my language skills.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

For Spanish, a fictional character that I believe is emblematic is Chespirito as his character "El Chavo" in "Chavo del Ocho", a famous Mexican television sitcom that was on air for decades all around Latin America. His character is loved and highly relatable.
For English, an emblematic representative, I would say is "Homer Simpson" of the American animated sitcom "The Simpsons". His character, created by Matt Groening, is a family man that loves donuts.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

-In Mexico, we wiggle our index finger up and down to say yes. Other cultures find this hilarious.
-Halloween is one of the most emblematic holidays in American culture, where people can dress up as whatever they like and children can go trick or treating.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

-Language breaks borders. For Spanish, I believe it opens the opportunities for you to connect with other Spanish-speakers, have better work opportunities and travel on a budget. There are cultural cues you pick up on easier once you understand the language.
-For English, I would say learning it widens your ability to communicate with people from all around the world that also speak English as a second language. It opens opportunities on a personal, academic and professional level. Being able to read books, surf around the internet and understand music I enjoyed was a big motivation for learning it.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

-For people learning Spanish, one of the main difficulties they encounter is with how to use verb tenses and reflexive verbs. However, I believe if you explain it in simple words, it's easier to understand.
-English learners have a hard time with pronunciation at a beginner's level and phrasal verbs at an advanced level. For the former I would recommend reading out loud every day and for the latter I highly suggest asking your teacher for guidance on this subject and being friends with native English speakers.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

For Spanish, I remember my older sister had trouble pronouncing the word "cucaracha" (cockroach in Spanish) and I would help her by breaking out the word into syllables, even though I was younger.
When I was in kindergarten, I remember the only thing I knew how to say in English was "I don't understand" and "May I go to the bathroom".
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I very recently became friends with more Colombians, Puerto Ricans, Argentinians and Spanish. They have helped me broaden my knowledge of the Spanish language and how it is used in different regions.
When I first moved to the U.S. eighteen years ago, I had to start communicating in English with my teachers and classmates. For this, I became friends with a Mexican girl that knew very little Spanish. We became good friends, and we helped each other learn a little more English and Spanish.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

The main reason I'm a teacher is I enjoy helping people reach their language goals. Learning a language is a powerful tool that can change people's lives. Having the opportunity to make a positive impact is important to me.
