The first thing one needs to understand about the sciences in general, especially computer science, is ABSTRACTION. I focus on helping students learn how to think not what to do. With abstraction being taught as a way of thinking about problems, my students can excel beyond anything they could have thought was achievable. Of course it helps that I am an experienced and professional working software engineer with a degree from a top university ;)
