About Kew

I’m a Master of Law student from Belgium, currently living in Ghent. I also hold a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology. I strongly believe in the idea of learning by doing. This philosophy shows in many areas of my life—running marathons, playing football, skateboarding, boxing, and even learning to play musical instruments. This list reflects my characteristic eagerness to learn. It’s also how I approach law: always from a practical perspective. What happens in practice often differs from what is taught in theory. And in the end, it’s usually those real-life cases that are tested on exams. More info? Check @kew_academy (Insta)

In my environment, I notice that fellow students often want to prepare for exams using traditional study methods. Usually, this just means memorizing the course material chronologically. Back “in the old days,” that was the only option. But let’s be honest: it’s a very slow method.

The world has changed and gone digital. Everything is online. And yes, exam questions too. I ALWAYS start with past exam questions—either provided by the professor or found online.

It surprises me that some students want to learn the entire course first. In practice, this often leads to time pressure, and they end up with no time left to look at past exam questions.

Why start with (past) exam questions?
-Your goal is to pass the exam, not just increase your knowledge for its own sake.
-High chance old questions will come back.
-You learn the style of questioning.
-You get straight to the essence of the subject...

In law, you really don’t need to memorize the entire textbook. Sure, some theoretical questions appear, but most points are always awarded for case studies that test understanding. And those cases are ALWAYS similar to past exam questions. So doesn’t it make sense to focus on them?

After working through past exams, PowerPoints and lecture notes become secondary. Again, by then you already know where the emphasis lies.

I always try to study actively and out loud, constantly asking myself questions.

In law, it’s crucial to be able to move from an abstract rule to a concrete example (often one given by the professor). After a while, even without classes, you’ll start inventing your own examples. Concrete examples really make everything more tangible.

One final skill I want to stress is creativity. Creative approaches to solving exam cases almost always earn you more points.
I have many more tips to share, but I’ll save those for later… :)
