About Carl
Latin rhythms filled my early childhood, mostly through family celebrations where guitar and dancing always seemed to go hand in hand. Ska entered my world later, discovered almost accidentally through a friend's older sibling's music collection during school years. Mixing both influences eventually shaped a teaching style built heavily around rhythm and movement. That same rhythm-focused approach still guides how I introduce young students to guitar today.
Working with children and school students means keeping energy high and explanations short throughout every single lesson. I avoid long theoretical talks entirely, since young attention spans respond far better to doing than listening. What I enjoy most is watching a child's face light up the moment they lock into a groove for the first time. That spark of excitement is honestly the reason I continue choosing to teach younger students.
I still play both Latin and ska styles casually, often practicing rhythms during quiet moments at home. Staying connected to both keeps my teaching lively and rooted in real, current musical feel. Lessons often lean toward whichever rhythm gets a young student most excited to keep practicing. My hope remains constant, that students carry genuine enthusiasm for guitar well beyond our lessons together.

Kids respond best to rhythm they can physically feel, so I open early lessons with simple clapping games before a guitar even comes into the picture. Latin style chord strums follow, their bright, syncopated feel naturally pulling young students into a steady groove. Ska rhythm guitar comes soon after, its distinctive upstroke pattern offering a fun, almost bouncy contrast to Latin's warmer feel. Both styles rely heavily on tight rhythm, making them useful tools for building a young student's timing early.
As comfort grows, I introduce simple chord changes set specifically against Latin and ska backing rhythms, keeping the focus playful rather than academic. School students often enjoy the challenge of switching quickly between the two contrasting feels within a single practice session. I use counting games and rhythm claps often here, reinforcing timing without turning practice into something dry or repetitive. Short, achievable goals guide each session, keeping younger students motivated through consistent, visible progress.
Consistency matters far more than long practice sessions at this age, and I remind parents of that regularly. Ten focused minutes daily tends to build stronger habits than one long, tiring weekend session. Songs students already recognise and enjoy remain central, keeping practice feeling fun rather than forced. My focus throughout stays simple, helping young students feel genuinely excited about picking up their guitar.
