I currently have a group piano class and a private lesson studio at the University of Dayton. I first check with each student what their goals and objectives are for lessons and class. I have a syllabus for each and have many resources and texts that they can choose from in regards to piano, theory, composition, arranging, and improvisation. I also like to use GarageBand and Finale with Zoom and tailor objectives around specific needs of students.

I’ve known and worked with Phillip for many years, and have no hesitation giving him the highest recommendation. He’s impressed me not only with the depth of his knowledge and experience, but how well he conveys what he knows. Phillip is a skilled communicator, and a patient teacher. He’s reliable and professional, and works well with both beginners and seasoned pros. Any student will be fortunate to have him as their teacher.
Quick preface - I take jazz lessons. Phil offers other types, but I'm going to speak about my experience taking jazz piano lessons.
I am so lucky to get a piano professor as experienced as Phil, my current jazz piano professor at the University of Dayton. This is my third semester with him, and he's really developed me from knowing nothing about jazz piano and little about chords into a better jazz pianist. I'm no master by any means, and I'll need years more of lessons and experience, but if you put in the work and effort, Phil will help you get there.
I mentioned in the beginning, Phil has lots of experience. He's been playing in bands and restaurants longer than I can comprehend. He took lessons, taught in public schools, and now teaches at the collegiate level and manages to teach lessons, practice, and play throughout Ohio.
Lastly, if you've been classically trained like I have, Phil teaches jazz really differently. You're not going to get a jazz book written on standard sheet music, and I didn't like this at first. Phil instead gave me lead sheets and developed my ability to play chords and inversions and pulled it from experience. He's organized (but flexible) and will supplement the teaching out of books, which I really appreciate because I know what to practice and how to get better outside of our lesson time. My best advice - it takes a while to demystify how jazz pianists, so take it slow, practice a lot, and trust the process.View more recommendations
