About Lyra
I have been fascinated by the study of the past since I was a child, and passionate about sharing my knowledge and helping others develop the skills to engage the past in ways that are empowering for them. After over 20 years working and studying within the top university programs, I am shifting to tutoring as a way to work in a more concentrated way with committed students, and to have more control over my work schedule. My lessons are tailored to the needs of individual students, based on whether they are in Middle School, High School (including all AP history texts), University, or pursuing lessons out of general interest.
My primary areas of expertise include: United States History, Black History/Africana Studies, and Classical Archaeology (Greece, Rome, and their empires).
What sets me apart as a tutor is the critical approach I teach my students, regardless of age and stage of learning. We interrogate the primary sources of historical information, and work to understand the reasons why certain historical narratives are emphasized in our society. This approach is especially valuable to young people of color who grow up (as I did) in a predominantly white society.
