About Ryan
I'm an MSc student in materials science and engineering at the Royal College of Mines, Imperial. I obtained a BSc from Penn State University in materials and worked for 3 years as a research assistant. My research area is high-entropy ceramics and more currently seashell-inspired ceramic composites.
While at Penn State University I was a teaching assistant in my first year for general chemistry, and teaching assistant for precalculus in my second.

My teaching philosophy rests on building intuition. This is easier than it may sound. Each year of education is built upon the last, success is a matter of mastering basic concepts and using them to build upwards towards the complexity of real-world problems.
Often when a student is having difficulty with a current problem the root cause is an incompletely understood concept from the past. This is not the student's fault. One missed day of class or a poor explanation from a teacher creates small gaps in learning that compound. Gaps from intermediate level geometry can lead to being lost in calculus II. It's my job as your tutor to help you fill these gaps.
This is a powerful approach. Repetition-based classroom lessons cannot teach this because they have 20+ students to educate. Teachers don't have the time in-class to address a single student who's not understood surface area. This problem is inevitable and can only be addressed with personalised education.
It's my belief that the student is never at fault. The failure of a student to learn is a function of external forces, and primarily the responsibility of the teacher.
