About Daniel

I am a historian with a Ph.D. in History from Florida State University, and I currently teach college-level U.S. History at Broward College and Miami Dade College. Each semester I work with more than 120 students across in-person, hybrid, and online sections, which has taught me how differently students learn and how to meet each one where they are. I also hold a Florida 6-12 Social Science teaching certification and have taught early college students at The College Academy at Broward College, so I am comfortable working with motivated high school students as well as undergraduates and graduate students.

My own research focuses on labor movements in Ireland and the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and I have presented and published that work in academic settings. That experience matters for my students, because I know firsthand what it takes to frame a research question, find and read sources, and turn them into a clear, well-supported argument. Those are exactly the skills I help students build.

I take every lesson seriously. I come prepared, I keep track of each student's goals and progress, and I give honest, specific feedback, because that is what actually helps students improve. Parents can expect clear communication and a plan tied to the student's coursework or exam dates.

I grew up in São Paulo, Brazil, and have lived in Florida for many years. I can work with students in English, Portuguese, or Spanish. Whether the goal is passing a course, earning a strong AP score, or finishing a thesis, I am glad to help students get there with confidence.

I teach history the way historians actually work, which means starting from a question rather than a list of facts to memorize. Every lesson is built around primary sources, the letters, speeches, laws, and images people left behind, and around learning to make an argument from them. In practice that means students learn to read a document closely, ask who wrote it and why, connect it to the bigger picture, and turn that into a clear thesis backed by evidence. Dates and names matter, but they stick far better once a student understands why something happened and what was at stake for the people involved.

A typical one-hour lesson starts with a quick check on what the student is working on, whether that is an upcoming exam, an essay, or a unit they find confusing. From there we work through one or two sources or a key concept together, and then the student practices the skill directly, outlining an essay, drafting a thesis paragraph, or answering a document-based question under real conditions. I give specific feedback on the spot and close with a short task to carry into the next session, so each lesson builds on the last.

I hold a Ph.D. in History from Florida State University and teach the U.S. History survey courses (AMH 2010 and AMH 2020) at Broward College and Miami Dade College, working with more than 120 students every semester in person, hybrid, and online. I also hold a Florida 6-12 Social Science teaching certification and have taught dedicated sections for The College Academy at Broward College, an early college program, so I know both what high school teachers expect and what college instructors will be grading. That combination lets me prepare students for the next level, not just the next test.

My lessons are for high school students in U.S. History, World History, and AP courses (including DBQ and LEQ practice for APUSH and AP World), dual enrollment and college students in survey courses, and undergraduate and graduate students working on research papers or theses who need help building an argument and working with sources. Lessons are available in English, and I can also work with students in Portuguese or Spanish.
