My American accent teaching method is based on personal goals and learning styles. We begin there. There is no "one size fits all" curriculum.

I have been teaching non-native adult speakers as a certified American accent tutor for more than 15 years and love what I do. I have been an educator for my entire career, beginning with high school English; then college writing, as an adjunct professor at NYU; and now American Accent Training. I have business experience as well, having owned and operated a public relations firm (while teaching part time at NYU). I find that my education and business background enables me to understand the varying needs and
goals of my students.

My students include tech professionals at Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Meta and elsewhere; doctors, lawyers, teachers, accountants, corporate executives, financial advisors, job seekers, and many who just want to feel comfortable going to the grocery store in the U.S.

They have come from Argentina, Belguim, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, France, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Russia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkey, and Ukraine. I learn as much (or more) from them as they do from me.

My approach is informal. We begin with diagnostic materials, so I can see where and to what degree the accent difficulties are. Because face and jaw muscles are formed according to our first language, we spend some time on facial and vocal exercises (as singers do), continue to vowel and consonant pronunciation, intonation, syllable stress, and all the subleties of accent. We use a "textbook" and practice manual as well as my own materials. We practice reading, using newspaper articles and literature specific to the student's work or interests. One student read poetry last week and thought it really helped him with intonation. We have lengthy conversations about the news, family issues, debates about AI, for exampIe. If a student has a presentation coming up for work, we practice those. A financial advisor advisor found that extremely helpful, having been praised by her manager and contributing to a promotion. Students tell me the lessons are "always fun" as well as helpful.
