About Albert
Greetings Earthlings! I am a nerd and proud of it! I have been nerding along since I got my first computer, a Commodore 64, on my twelfth birthday in 1984. In my twenties I managed to spend four years outside of South Africa. After Matric I lived in Germany for a year as an exchange student. I then returned to South Africa to study Electronic Engineering at Tukkies. I received my B.Eng with distinction and on the back of that I applied for and received a Monbusho scholarship to complete my M.Eng in Japan. That led to my spending three years living in Tokyo and studying at Denki Tsushin Daigaku. I speak German and Japanese, though I have to admit that my German is rather more fluent than my Japanese. The reason why I emphasize this part of my life story is that living and functioning in foreign languages taught me how to listen carefully and well. When working as a programmer I can usually identify where a misunderstanding between people is coming from because I instinctively listen to other people until I can see the world from their point of view. As a result I have defused many situations by listening till I understood everyone and then guiding everybody to a harmonious result. When teaching I follow a similar technique. I ask questions and listen carefully to assess my student's current level of knowledge and to identify any gaps in background knowledge. From there I use the Socratic method to challenge the student with questions especially chosen to guide the student from where they are to where they should be. I have tutored English in Japan and Germany, Signals Processing while I was at University and various programming languages and programming techniques to my younger colleagues. I recently managed to move my daughter's mathematics marks from in the 40's to in the 60's by using these techniques.

I belong to the first generation of boys who grew up with a video game system in my home. I fell in love with games and that love drove me to learn programming, to become an electronic engineer and to ultimately get my M.Eng in Electronic Engineering. Because I was programming video games I had an immediate and intuitive understanding of high school mathematics and physics which enabled me to easily get distinctions in both subjects in Matric. My lessons are aimed at learners who enjoy video games and who need a little extra motivation and context to fully understand and master what is being taught in school. In our lessons I will relate the school concepts to things that pupils see in video games or in other real-world engineering applications. Of course, I am still a gamer. At the moment my favorite games are Terraria, RimWorld and Valheim.
