• When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

  I became interested in private tutoring about 2 years ago. I had been working full-time as a nurse and then dropped down to a PRN position. I missed the educational opportunities that came with working full-time in the clinical setting, so I pursued private tutoring to fulfill that area of passion for me.

• Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

  I am a baccalaureate prepared registered nurse and I love to tutor all things nursing! I support students from the very beginning of their journey (entrance exams), through their nursing program (nursing school courses), and to the completion of their degree and licensure (NCLEX). If I had to pick one area I like the most, it is probably helping students through their nursing program courses. Nursing school is tough and it makes it so much more bearable to have someone come alongside you - I get to be that someone!

• Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

  Definitely. My love for science started in High School with my Biology teacher Mr. Herman. In my nursing program, I was taught by some amazing faculty that, without a doubt, helped form me into the nurse I am today. A couple of those individuals being Jenn Gable and Renae Boss Potts.

• What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

  Oh man, I think there are a few that are telling of a quality tutor. I think for one, listening and tailoring your approach to each student's needs is an important one. If you go into a session with your own agenda, you might miss the opportunity to help someone. Flexibility is important - life happens. Knowledge, of course, so that you can expertly share on tough topics. Honesty, because we don't know everything. So, if there is something the student is asking that we don't know or need to brush up on, I believe it's important to be honest about it. I would also include patience, kindness, and compassion. There are more of course, but I think those are some of the top ones!

• Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

  When I first started nursing school, it was compared to running a marathon. You have to be in it for the long haul. After graduating and getting my license, I can confirm that it is very much like that. Now in my tutoring practice, I love getting to be the "cheer squad" and "trainer" for my students "running the marathon" of nursing school.

• What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

  While I got good grades in my nursing program, I had to work my butt off for them! School has never been one of my "favorite things" but I love being a nurse, so I understand and empathize with those in the same boat.

• Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

  Nursing, teaching and coaching are my passions! While being a nurse and tutor, I am also a Nurse Coach, so I feel like I get to live out my passions in my work everyday!

• What makes you a Superprof?

  Because I am intentional to not take on more students than I can handle. Meaning, once you are on my "active student roster," I will make time for you and support you in whichever way works best for you!
