About Eliza
I am a Biology tutor with 9 years of experience and an MRes in Biomedical Science. I have taught over 340 students, a significant proportion of whom are preparing for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and other health science university programs. My biomedical science research background means I bring a genuinely medical and clinical perspective to Biology teaching that general Biology instruction cannot provide, and my specific knowledge of the medical school admission process means I can prepare students for every dimension of their application including the Biology content of entrance examinations. My Biology teaching for students preparing for medicine, pharmacy, and allied health sciences specifically develops the physiological and biochemical understanding that is foundational to all health science education, while connecting biological principles consistently to clinical applications. Human physiology is taught at the mechanistic level required for medical education, not only at the system level sufficient for A-Level, because pre-medical students benefit from understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms that underlie physiological processes even before they encounter clinical medicine. Pharmacology principles — receptor theory, dose-response relationships, drug metabolism, and the relationship between mechanism and side effect profile — are introduced as an application of the biochemistry and physiology already developed, because these connections make pharmacology both more memorable and more genuinely understood. I teach the biochemistry of disease — how molecular defects produce physiological dysfunction, how the pathology of specific conditions can be traced to biochemical mechanisms — because this mechanistic approach develops exactly the kind of pathophysiological reasoning that medical education requires. Clinical case studies are used as teaching vehicles throughout, presenting simplified but genuine clinical scenarios and asking students to reason from mechanism to diagnosis and from diagnosis to treatment, because this case-based reasoning is the mode of thinking medical education develops and students who have begun this development before starting medicine have a significant advantage. The specific Biology content of medical school entrance examinations — BMAT, UCAT, UKCAT — is addressed with specific preparation for students seeking UK medical school entry. My teaching goal is a Biology student who is genuinely prepared for the demands of health science education.
