Find out more about Yashaswini

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in science and maths started during school because I genuinely enjoyed understanding how things work rather than memorising formulas or definitions. Biology fascinated me because it explained life itself, while maths and physics taught me how logical thinking can solve complex problems. I started tutoring informally by helping classmates before exams, and I realised I loved simplifying difficult topics and helping others gain confidence in subjects they once feared.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Maths at GCSE and A Level, along with some university-level biology subjects. I especially enjoy teaching topics where students usually struggle at first, because I like showing them that difficult concepts can actually become simple with the right explanation. In Biology, I enjoy human biology and molecular concepts. In Chemistry, I enjoy physical chemistry and reaction mechanisms. In Physics and Maths, I enjoy problem solving and helping students develop logical thinking. I enjoy lessons most when students become curious and start asking deeper questions rather than just studying for exams.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I have always admired ancient Indian teachers like Chanakya because they believed education should shape thinking, discipline, and confidence rather than only grades. That philosophy inspired me deeply. I also admire teachers who can make difficult topics feel simple and engaging, because that is the kind of tutor I always wanted to become for my own students.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think a good tutor needs patience, empathy, adaptability, and strong communication skills. Every student learns differently, so a tutor should be able to explain the same concept in multiple ways until it clicks. A good tutor should also create a comfortable environment where students feel confident asking questions without fear of being judged.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I remember helping a classmate who was struggling badly with physics calculations before an exam. She believed she was simply “not a physics person.” Instead of starting with formulas, I explained the concepts visually and connected them to everyday situations. Slowly, the fear disappeared and she started solving problems on her own. That experience taught me how much confidence and teaching style can completely change a student’s relationship with a subject.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One challenge I faced was balancing understanding with the large amount of content in science subjects. Early on, I realised memorisation alone was never enough, especially in subjects like chemistry and biology where concepts are interconnected. During higher studies and now my PhD, I learned how important it is to focus on logic, patterns, and problem solving rather than trying to memorise everything.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My biggest passion is making difficult subjects feel approachable and enjoyable. I genuinely enjoy the moment when students stop feeling intimidated by maths or science and begin to understand concepts with confidence. I especially enjoy simplifying complex biology and chemistry topics and helping students develop analytical thinking in maths and physics.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I combine strong academic training with a very approachable teaching style. My background includes training at Harvard Medical School, a Master’s in Cancer Biology, and ongoing PhD research in Cancer Sciences, but I always focus on explaining concepts in a simple, relatable, and student-friendly way. I care deeply about helping students build confidence, not just achieve grades, and I always personalise lessons based on how each student learns best.
