About Richard
I have 4 years of experience teaching calculus at the University of Chicago. I also have 7 years of experience developing interactive instructional materials for middle school through high school mathematics, covering a wide range of topics, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, probability, statistics and calculus. Additionally, on account of my college and graduate education in mathematics I have a strong command of all standard undergraduate math material. I have worked as a course assistant for differential equations and abstract algebra courses. Some other relevant experience is that I have mentored undergraduates in mathematics and I have been a counselor at a summer math camp.

The first thing I want to know is what topics and problem types the student needs help with. My primary tutoring activity will be to go through sample problems with the student, making sure they understand every step, to help them learn how to solve the problems. I give them the opportunity to get stuck and overcome obstacles themselves, but will observe and coach when needed to make sure they do not remain stuck.
While working through practice problems, I can determine the gaps in their knowledge and skills. I will make a plan for filling them in, starting with the most foundational skills. In the sessions, I will coach them through problems to make sure they gain needed understanding. I will also provide practice problems to practice and consolidate skills between sessions.
