Find out more about Bryan

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

It was seeing Linkin Park on TV and Green Day on YouTube that inspired me to pick up the electric guitar! I was about 10 years old at the time, and fortunately started having private lessons since my school did not offer guitar lessons. From then on I remember dancing to Michael Jackson and Queen... and I have loved music ever since.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I can listen to instrumental jazz for days as the crazy improvisations just keep me hooked constantly - I never get bored!
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

I think the most difficult course would be the method of transcription and deep listening as it is often overlooked. On several occasions I have been told that it completely changes their ears and perception of music. It is as though they are hearing the song for the first time in this way, even though it may be a song they have heard many times over.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

The organ! How is it possible to use all four limbs and play all four parts at the same time?! I know the drums require that, but they are not melodic...
  • What are your keys to success?

Boring answer but... hard work. Plus the right guidance and direction, hard work becomes smart work, and eventually you'll get there.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

I would love to meet Slash just to find out more about his rock n roll personality, Charlie Parker to find out about the myth of him practising in all 12 keys, and Robben Ford because I love his mix of jazz-blues playing!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

Music is a language. You learn the alphabet (notes), grammar (theory), words and sentences (phrases). There are elements such as dynamics, tone, speed, articulations (which are like accents), call and response, and much more.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

Both the process and the result matters to me. Therefore the material that I deliver is pragmatic and straight to the point so that the students become competent and achieve their goals.
