About Maya
I have been passionate about guitar from an early age, fascinated by how strings, rhythm, and technique can merge into meaningful music. This interest led me to pursue a B.F.A. in Contemporary Guitar Studies, where I deepened my understanding of technique, musical theory, and performance. Over the past 9 years, I have taught students at all levels, tailoring lessons to each individual’s pace, interests, and goals. I strive to create an encouraging and structured environment that inspires learning while maintaining enjoyment. My teaching philosophy emphasises clarity, patience, and adaptability. I break down techniques into manageable steps, providing visual, auditory, and practical guidance to suit different learning styles. Whether a student is mastering basic chords or tackling advanced improvisation, I focus on building confidence alongside skill. Celebrating small victories is an essential part of my approach, as it helps learners stay motivated and recognise progress in meaningful ways. Outside the classroom, I continue exploring new techniques, musical genres, and performance opportunities. These experiences inform my teaching and allow me to bring fresh perspectives into lessons. Guiding students is incredibly rewarding because I witness their growth, not only musically but personally. Helping learners find their unique voice, build confidence, and connect with music is the most fulfilling aspect of my work.

Guitar lessons begin by establishing a strong foundation in posture, hand positioning, and basic chord shapes. Beginners explore simple melodies, strumming patterns, and finger exercises designed to develop coordination and tone clarity. I focus on creating a positive learning environment where students feel safe experimenting, making mistakes, and gradually gaining confidence. Each session emphasises proper technique from the very beginning to prevent the formation of bad habits and to build an efficient approach to playing. As students progress, lessons evolve to include more complex chord transitions, fingerstyle patterns, scales, and improvisational skills. Intermediate learners work on rhythm refinement, dynamic control, and understanding how to express emotion through phrasing and articulation. Advanced students explore stylistic versatility, advanced techniques, and performance preparation. Lessons combine structured exercises with creative exploration to ensure learners continue developing both skill and musical intuition. I emphasise not just learning notes but truly understanding musical expression. Guitar lessons also encourage personal growth beyond technical skill. Students build patience, concentration, and confidence as they learn to express themselves through the instrument. Improvisation and composition exercises help them develop a unique musical voice. By the end of each lesson, students are not only improving their technical ability but also gaining insight into how music can communicate emotion and creativity. My goal is to help each student feel empowered, expressive, and capable of performing with confidence.
