About Derek
I’ve always enjoyed helping others make sense of things, whether it’s a tough maths question or an abstract economics idea. Through my experience tutoring students from primary school to A-Level, I’ve seen how effective one-to-one teaching can be when it’s tailored to the student. Unlike in a classroom, I can adapt how I explain things based on how you learn, whether that’s step-by-step breakdowns, visual aids, or linking topics to real-life examples. I enjoy figuring out what works best for each student, and I want to teach because I know how much of a difference that personalised approach can make — not just for exam results, but for confidence and long-term understanding.

I’ve worked with students at a variety of stages — from primary school pupils as a Lion Learning Mentor, to GCSE and A-Level students through Cherry Hill Tuition, as well as informal tutoring for family friends. Across all these experiences, one constant has been the importance of tailoring my approach to each student. No two learners are the same, and I pride myself on adapting my teaching style to suit their needs, learning preferences, and goals. A major focus of my lessons is exam preparation — whether that’s for school entrance exams, GCSEs, or A-Levels. I help students understand exactly what examiners are looking for, and we practise applying knowledge under timed conditions to build confidence and exam technique. My sessions combine clear explanations, targeted practice, and structured feedback so students can see their progress and feel ready for the real thing. Above all, I aim to create a supportive environment where students feel confident to ask questions, and steadily work toward success.
