I believe that no one is "bad" at school or learning, they just haven't been taught using methods that fit their learning style and goals. I'm a big believer in sometimes having to go backward in over to go forward, especially in math. If the foundation is weak you can't expect to be able to build very much on that foundation. Thus my approach for teaching math is to find the level of math the student is comfortable and confident with and build up from there. Consistency is key so I will usually give some exercises or suggestions for practice along with each session to be completed daily until our next session.
