About Wei

I worked as a researcher at University College London and Imperial College London for about 15 years. I have broad experience in the research and teaching at higher education institutions. Excellent at teaching, lecturing, tutorials, designing coursework and exam questions, demonstration and marking. Mathematical Methods, Classical Mechanics, Research Methodology, Advanced materials processing (metal and ceramics processing, and surface hardening), and advanced materials characterisations (x-ray diffraction, neutron scattering). Experienced at supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students. I am strongly experienced at research student supervision, including Ph.D and MSc. I have supervised ~ 30 MSc students for a wide range of topics across physics and materials. Co-supervise Ph.D student. My research interests include magnetism, optics, opto-spintronics, quantum technology, and topological properties in low-dimensional systems. I have extensive and solid research experience on materials modelling and theoretical condensed matter physics. 60 papers (3 conference papers) have been published in the peer-reviewed journals. Seven papers have an impact factor higher than 10. One Nature Communications, two NPG Asia Materials, two Advanced Materials, two ACS Nano, and one Scientific Reports. 14 Physical Review B. Excellent at programming including Fortran, C++, Mathematica, Matlab, Python, and Julia, etc. Invited Talks: CPS Fall 2024, PIERS 2024, CECAM flag workshop 2023, Materials Today Conference 2023, and Future Materials 2022 (sponsored by Royal Society of Chemistry). I have also worked as a referee for npj Quantum Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, and ACS journals, etc.

Mathematics 1. Conceptual Understanding Over Memorisation - Use real-world applications to explain abstract concepts. - Encourage students to derive formulae rather than memorising them. 2. Problem-Solving Strategies - Teach heuristics (e.g., breaking down problems, working backward). - Encourage multiple approaches to a single problem. 3. Technology Integration - Utilise graphing calculators, maths apps (e.g., Desmos, GeoGebra), and simulations. - Incorporate video explanations and step-by-step digital solutions. --- Physics 1. Inquiry-Based Learning - Encourage students to ask questions and design their own experiments. - Use the Socratic method to guide students to conclusions. 2. Real-Life Applications - Explain physics concepts using everyday phenomena (e.g., projectile motion in sports, circuits in electronics). - Relate topics to modern technology and engineering fields. 3. Visualisation and Multimedia - Use videos, animations, and augmented reality (AR) to explain abstract concepts like relativity or quantum mechanics. - Employ free-body diagrams and vector visualisations. 4. Mathematical Modelling - Teach students how to derive equations from physical laws. - Use computational tools (Python, MATLAB) for simulations. --- Chemistry 1. Visualisation of Abstract Concepts - Use molecular models to represent atomic structures and bonding. - Utilise simulations for chemical reactions, stoichiometry, and thermodynamics. 2. Interdisciplinary Approach - Relate chemistry to biology (biochemistry), physics (thermodynamics), and environmental science (climate change). - Discuss real-world applications like pharmaceuticals, materials science, and food chemistry. 3. Problem-Based Learning (PBL) - Give real-life chemistry problems (e.g., how to neutralise acid spills, analysing water quality). - Encourage students to develop hypotheses and solutions through guided inquiry.
