About Mia Rae
While at CalLu, I completed the Single Subject Teaching Program and an internship at the University’s Math Center. The Single Subject Program allowed me to take classes on pedagogy and teaching practices ‘post-COVID’ so that, as teachers, we can better support students impacted by the pandemic. The internship helped with strengthening communication and listening skills, as well as the ability to transition from one subject to another when working with a group. Teaching at Fusion Academy has given me the opportunity to take these experiences and put them to practice as I have taught mathematics from sixth grade to twelfth grade students.

Seeing how math is used in the world around us can help establish a connection with math that leads to a better understanding. This approach has helped me while teaching students at Fusion Academy as it allows for using visuals, analogies, and hands-on strategies while getting the student to interact with the concept. I teach by talking with the student, not at the student. I also encourage my students to advocate for their needs. If a student needs more time or a different type of explanation, they deserve to be taught in a way that fits their learning.
