Basically before starting teaching any student I check his/her prerequisite knowledge about that topic if he/she is good then go ahead otherwise I work on his/her basic first. Then I explain those topics why we are doing this what we can do with that and what are application in real world if it exists.
So he/she can understand well instead of memorizing.
