Perfect! I’ve never before left a review for a language instructor, but Eric is such an excellent tutor that I really wanted to share my experience with others.

Studying foreign languages (my native language is American English) is one of my favorite hobbies and at one time or another I’ve taken classes in well over ten languages. I decided to take some lessons in Khmer in advance of a planned trip to Cambodia (I took lessons online – we used Skype and Discord to connect). Being a very busy financial consultant, I knew that I wouldn’t have much time to study between lessons and my expectations were therefore very modest in terms of how much I’d be able to learn, especially since I knew that the Khmer language poses special difficulties for foreigners, particularly in terms of pronunciation.

In the event, I took perhaps 10 one-hour lessons with Eric over the course of several months and I must say that he is one of the very, very top language instructors I have ever had the pleasure to study with. He always went above and beyond what anyone could expect from a language tutor. For one thing, his approach is extremely flexible – I wanted to use a textbook, which he agreed to, but for each class he always had additional materials prepared, and they were extremely helpful. Eric was also very patient in cases when I had trouble understanding some of the complexities in Khmer grammar and usage. Unlike some other tutors I’ve studied with in the past, Eric always welcomed any and all questions and gave very clear and well-thought out answers. Despite his own very busy schedule, he always tried to accommodate me when my work responsibilities required switching our regular time to another day or time slot.

I think it’s also work noting that Eric is himself a brilliant student of linguistics and brings a deep understanding of the science of language to each lesson. He has a command of a number of other languages and would at times offer examples from other languages to help me grasp a word or usage that was giving me particular difficulty.

And finally, Eric is just a very nice person – with a great sense of humor and a very engaging personality. When you put all of these qualities together, I believe he’s really the perfect tutor for anyone wishing to develop some facility in the Khmer language.

And yes, in Cambodia, I found that almost everyone I tried to speak with was able to understand the phrases and sentences that I learned during my study with Eric. So thank you very much, Eric, for your dedication and for helping me learn some Khmer – it really did greatly enhance my enjoyment of my trip to the fabulously interesting country of Cambodia and its wonderful people.
