About Alyssa

My name is Alyssa, I am a graduate student in philosophy at Boston College. I received my Bachelor's degree in English (with honors) from Florida State University. I have minors in chemistry, biology, and anthropology. I have spent the last four years at Boston College earning my Master's degree and tutoring English, philosophy, general writing, theology, literature, and research.

Someday, I want to be a philosophy professor because I believe that reading the classics help us decide who we want to be as people. I love my students; that is why I want to be a scholar. I am dedicated to helping students grow into the people they want to become through their use of language.

During my time at Boston College, I have accumulated about ten students that I work with almost every week. We talk, we laugh, we read books, and we discuss how to improve our writing skills. I respect my students as intelligent, hard-working people who want help learning how to structure their assignments, learn more vocabulary, or read new books.

In my personal life, I enjoy swimming competitively, spending time with my significant other and two cats, crocheting, and playing the piano.

I look forward to working with you!

I tutor in two ways: I meet with the student at a regularly scheduled time to discuss the materials covered in their class, or I plan to meet with students three or four times per long paper or assignment. I prefer the first method; the more frequently the student discusses the material, the easier the assignments will become and the more they will learn. I do, however, understand the time or financial constraints that lead to the necessity of the second method. Once we choose a path, I meet with the student.

Generally, I like to hear from the student about the assignment, teacher, and course in which I will be tutoring them during the first meeting. I usually have them show me the work they have already completed; I look through their materials and point out all of the things they have done well. I assure them that my tutoring is not about me providing them with help, but is rather about learning to discuss ideas and strategies with other people. Even at the highest levels of academia, scholars discuss their ideas with other people and learn how to improve their own skills.

Then, I take notes on what I need to research about the assignment to help the most. I am sure to tell the student I will also be learning the material so that they understand that no one is just naturally brilliant; success is the result of time well spent.

We then make a "To-Do List", an outline, and a schedule for the next week or two. I tell them that I will be excited to discuss the book or material in depth the next time and that I will read the same materials so that we can have a discussion. For longer papers or assignments, I like to have three meetings: one for discussing the assignment and making a plan, one for discussing the material, and one for proofreading. If another meeting is needed, then we schedule another meeting.

Especially when it comes to writing, building trust is very important. This is why I prefer to meet with my students regularly and frequently

I take the train into and within the city, so my transportation fee with be adjusted according to the amount that I need to travel.

I will only increase my price if I earn higher degrees. I am not interested in charging unreasonable rates, but Boston is expensive and I expect my patrons to understand this.

Tutoring writing is more complicated than tutoring many other subjects due to the subjective nature of writing (both academic and professional). I usually spend extra time researching the assignment or book outside of the time I spend with my students, that is why my fee is so high.

I do not negotiate my fees.
