Ben Finlay is a multi instrumentalist and composer based in London, UK. Having studied cello at the Royal Academy of Music, Ben’s expertise ranges from historical performance to premiering new works. He has had the chance to work under the baton amongst some of the UK’s finest conductors including John Wilson, Ed Gardner, and Thomas Ades, performing at the BBC Proms and in the nation’s top concert halls. His compositional language focuses on integrating live instrumental music with the sound worlds of synthesisers, field recording, and popular electronic music styles. As a member of the S.O.L. Collective, he recorded on the 2019 album Reveries and regularly performs with them as well as regularly recording music for films. This has also led him to collaborate with ex-Jamiroquai bassist Stuart Zender. What can you expect from a lesson with me? -Let's discuss a range of different techniques to improve through short compositional tasks and exercises to expand out of your comfort zone. What might we learn from writing with some imposed limitations? How do I write music based on a painting? -The DAWs of perception... pen and paper, Sibelius, MuseScore, Logic, Ableton, and trackers. The list goes on and on! All are valid ways to make music and I've spent a large amount of time with all of them. If don't understand convolution reverb or have your crotchets the wrong way round, I'm here to help. -Trying to find your voice? What are you really trying to say in your music? How do I move away from imitating? These are all difficult questions and they always require striking a balance. -Listen closely... although we might not want to imitate, how do learn from our heroes to expand our vocabulary? A closer look at some John Williams' score will show you how he borrowed orchestration from other famous composers. -Debussy or dubstep? As a lover of a great variety of music, we will see how we can draw on our knowledge of different sonic cultures to expand our language in our writing. -Don't have expensive gear or software? Not an issue. These days companies are trying to scam your left, right, and centre. Learn to work within your budget by exploring the creative frontiers of what you have available to you. -Is all good art made from suffering? No. Let's look at the benefits of the tried and tested holistic practices eg. breath work, relaxation techniques, yoga, calisthenics, stretching and more... Debussy or Dubstep? The what doesn't really matter. The question is how?r
