The very first thing I like to do is a mini-assessment to see what my student's strengths and weaknesses are and so that we have a baseline from improvement and areas to focus on in following lessons.
I emphasise exam technique as I know from experience that many marks can be lost not because of knowledge or understanding but because the question was not approached properly. Cleaning up exam technique can add several marks to your score without even learning anything new.
