About Ethan
The training I received at Roanoke College for writing tutoring was a course in which I read the theories about the best ways to teach writing to college students, how to meet students where they're at, and how to encourage them to become stronger writers. I always like to crack jokes with my students to reassure them that this working relationship is between colleagues; I never want to make it seem like I am in a position of power or authority over a student's work. As I always told them, "you can choose to ignore my suggestions and I will not be offended. This is your work and I want to keep that integrity."

My style sets me apart from how most tutors help students with writing. I am a firm believer that grammar is only a small part of what makes a good essay, and therefore I will do far more than correct your grammar. I will challenge you to think out loud about what your thesis is, how you can word it, and I will challenge you to think deeper about certain topics you're writing about. But most importantly, I will compliment your excellent work and the qualities of your essay that are already strong. Everybody's rough draft has something worth a compliment!
