About Felix

I am a recent graduate from Grinnell College with majors in Sociology and Environmental Studies. At Grinnell, I was a writing mentor for a year with the Grinnell College Writing Lab, and took a semester-long course prior which taught me how to become a successful mentor. In this course we learned idea-creation strategies, how to concept-map, productive revising and editing approaches, and how to develop a great rapport between student and mentor.

As a writing mentor, I have read papers across a number of topics, such as literature, art history, archaeology, psychology, and sociology. I gain a lot of joy reading the writing of others: it is both fun and highly interesting to consider someone else's ideas on both familiar and foreign topics, and it makes me a better writer and writing mentor to be immersed by writing of all sorts. My goal is for students to feel both comfortable with the writing process and excited to write, and I prioritize keeping an enjoyable atmosphere. I always seek to value the student's time, and make it a space where they can ask any questions about their own work.

Typically, my lessons start with reading through the essay/paper together with the student so we can both familiarize ourselves with the content we are discussing. Students sometimes like to send me a draft before the meeting begins so that I can prepare some thoughts. Then, I ask the student if there are any parts of their writing that they want to work on, and we look at those sections before I provide some of my own comments. Also, I believe that good writing comes from good ideas, so some parts of the session may be devoted to mapping out concepts, brainstorming, and talking through essay structure. Based on the kind of project we are working on (whether it be a paper for class, an application, a cover letter, or a different kind of assignment), the layout of the session may be a little different.

The writing process is tricky, and one that takes time for everyone to improve. I look at tutoring as a collaborative effort: not just a place for me to throw suggestions at a student, but a time where they feel comfortable working through concepts and we can talk about what does and doesn't work together.

These lessons are for students that are high school through college age-- my experience in tutoring is with this level of writing. The papers can be for any class, but I prefer content that is not too much on the scientific/technical side since my specialty is in writing and editing.
