About Will

William Jae, pianist and composer, is a native of Los Angeles, California. His broad interest in the arts and sciences combined with his keen sense of melody and harmony has pushed him to explore and discover unique connections through his music. William first began his musical studies, teaching himself piano around the age of 10. From 2018 to 2020, he became the recipient of the Herbert Zipper Scholarship, which allowed him to study music at the Colburn School of Music tuition-free. It was during this time that William developed a keen interest in music composition. From 2019 to 2020, he was a fellow at the Composer Fellowship Program where he was mentored by renowned composers such as Andrew Norman, Sarah Gibson, and Thomas Kotcheff. During his time as a fellow, William was introduced to contemporary classical music and this was evident when he wrote his first string trio, Alabaster Wool. It premiered in 2019 at Choral Hall inside the Walt Disney Concert Hall and was performed by the Lyris Quartet. During the pandemic, William became the recipient of the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Young Artists Award and made his From the Top debut in Blanket Fort 2, hosted by Peter Dugan. In that same year, he was also a semi-finalist in the 2020 ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composers Award. In 2021, William scored his first independent feature film in Rochester, which has received several accolades at various film festivals. In 2022, he was a fellow at Norfolk New Music Workshop, where his piano quartet, Elegy for the Victims, premiered in response to recent gun violence in America. This year, William won first prize for the Society for Chamber Music in Rochester Composition Competition for Fragile Dreams. William is a recent graduate at the Eastman School of Music and University of Rochester where he earned a dual degree in music composition and psychology. He cites Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon, Matthew Barber, Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez and Daniel Pesca as important mentors during his time at Eastman. He is the former founder and artistic director of the Eastman Chamber Orchestra (EChO), a student-run chamber orchestra.
