About Nirsharisse

Hi! My name is Nirsharisse, and I’m a human development and psychology graduate from Cornell University class of May 2025, who genuinely enjoys working with and supporting young people. I’m a curious and creative person, and I’m always looking for something new to learn or create.

Outside of tutoring, I enjoy bike riding, video games, playing and watching soccer and basketball, painting and watercolor, drawing, writing, and reading. I love creative activities because they give me different ways to express myself and see things from different perspectives. I also enjoy learning about people across the lifespan and what makes each person unique, which is one of the reasons I chose to study Human Development.

When I tutor, I try to bring that same curiosity and creativity into my lessons. I want students to feel comfortable asking questions and taking their time when they don't understand something. I’m patient and encouraging, and I believe that everyone learns differently. Sometimes, a concept just needs to be explained differently for it to make sense, as it does for me!

My goal is to make learning feel less intimidating while helping students build both their understanding and confidence. If it’s homework, studying for a test, or reviewing something difficult from class, I want students to leave our lessons thinking, “Okay, I actually get this now.”

My approach as a tutor :D

I believe students learn math best when they understand the reasoning behind each step instead of memorizing formulas. My approach is patient, encouraging, and personalized to each student's learning style and current level.

When tutoring algebra, I first identify what the student already understands and where they are getting stuck. From there, I break difficult concepts into smaller, manageable steps that work with the student and use examples that make the material easier to visualize and relate to. I encourage students to work through problems themselves while I guide them with questions and explanations rather than giving them the answer.

A typical lesson!

A typical lesson begins with a quick review of previous material and a few practice questions to identify anything that needs clarification. We then focus on the student's current topic or homework, going through examples together and breaking down the problem-solving process step by step.

After introducing or reviewing a concept, I have the student try similar problems independently while I provide guidance when needed. We finish by reviewing the main concepts covered, addressing any remaining questions, and identifying what the student should continue practicing.

What sets me apart?

My background in Human Development and psychology has given me an understanding of how students learn differently and how important patience and encouragement can be when someone is struggling with a subject. I want students to feel comfortable asking ANY questions. I create a comfortable environment where they can ask questions, make mistakes, and build confidence.

I also focus on helping students develop problem-solving skills they can apply to new problems rather than teaching them to memorize one specific method.

Who do I tutor?

I tutor middle school and high school students who are taking pre-algebra, Algebra I, or Algebra II. I can support students with homework, classwork, test preparation, reviewing difficult concepts, building foundational skills, and developing stronger confidence in mathematics.

I am especially comfortable working with students who feel behind, need concepts explained in a different way, or benefit from additional one-on-one practice.
