About Derek
Hi there! My name is Derek Reading (yes, just like reading a book). Despite my namesake, I have always had a love and passion for math. When I was six years old, my parents got me a whiteboard for my birthday, and all I would use it for was doing math that I learned at school for fun. When I was an adult and decided to become a teacher, math was the only thing I wanted to teach. I find absolute joy in helping people understand confusing math topics, and there is nothing better than witnessing that moment when they say, "Oh, now I get it!" I will do everything it takes to get you to those moments by learning what brings you joy and clarity, and remain nothing but supportive in the process.

During my time as a math teacher, students loved the way I brought math to life for them. Two ways in which my students found success in math were:
1. I made everything visual, especially counterintuitive concepts. WHY do we carry the one when we add? WHY is a number raised to the zero power equal to one? WHY is a negative times a negative a positive? Let me show you!
2. I brought in a plethora of real-world examples. Students helped my sister create a budget for her wedding. Students helped me manage my diabetes by calculating how much insulin to take after a certain meal. Students calculated how much recarpeting their house would cost. Rarely did a student ever ask, "When are we going to use this in real life?"
