About Rachel

I have recent experience of both teaching and tutoring. I currently teach in a school and have been teaching since September 2022, starting as supply before moving to a permanent role and I have been at my current school since the January term.
I have also tutored previously, whilst still a student and I am now coming back to it, around school hours. I really enjoy working one on one with students and working with them to achieve their goals.

I did my degree in English Language and Literature at The University of Sheffield and my modules covered a range of topics. I spend a lot of my spare time researching topics and keeping up to date with teaching methods, completing online training and ensuring that my skills are kept up to date.

I also self taught for my maths A Level.

I have extensive knowledge of the curriculum and I am comfortable with different exam boards. I will also start by seeing where students are by completing past papers and marking these and finding the areas of weakness and look at a plan to work towards reaching target grades, including setting out a timeline to ensure we are staying on track.
I will also seek to find out what the current grades are (as assessed by school) and what the predicted grades are and what the grade the student is working towards. I will also be honest if something is unobtainable as I would prefer students to have realistic expectations. This isn't saying things are impossible and my methods have been proven to show how students can improve their grades.

My teaching method is to first understand each student, their interests and what makes them happy. Using this, I then adapt my style based on each individual students needs.
Some students prefer listening, others would prefer reading, some may prefer using visualisation.
Teaching will always be based on what works for the student, finding out their interests and then adapting learning so that they are able to understand it.
This may not always be possible, but wherever it is, it will be tailored to the student for their own interests, if not possible, then it will be delivered in a way that is adaptable to their learning style and on a level that they understand.
I will follow the national curriculum and always use the current curriculum for the exam board that is needed for the student, so that they have the best chance of success.
I will deliver lessons in a fun, yet educational way, ensuring that delivery is a mix of teaching and understanding the level that they’re at. I will also use past exam papers to ensure that they are progressing to the standard that is needed and mark any papers they do to check their progress.

I will ensure that there are plenty of resources available for the student to take away from lessons and available to message out of tutor time and will endeavour to answer any questions related to the subject and offer help and support.
