About Dan
My secondary education was at Highgate School in North London, and after graduating in 2016, I took a gap year and then completed my first degree. Since then, I have lived abroad, completed national service and worked as a Scientific Grant Consultant.
In 2024, I returned to full-time education and am studying to be a vet, and I am pleased to say that so far, it has been a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
I am of course happy to answer any further questions or provide a full CV upon request.

My name is Dan and in 2020 I completed my degree B.Sc. (Hons.) in Biological Sciences at the University of Birmingham. Since graduating, I have worked as a Scientific Grant Consultant and as a Private Tutor. I also have over a decade of experience in youth leadership and informal education.
I am now studying for my second degree in Veterinary Medicine at the Royal Veterinary College.
My various educational experiences and role models have inspired me with a fervour and dedication for learning.
I especially love the life sciences as it is an ever-changing field with many interdisciplinary aspects. I am often drawing from other fields such as statistics and chemistry, to phycology and environmental science. This constant pressure to further my knowledge and skills in other fields, I feel helps me to be an effective tutor and I can think about a problem or exam question from different perspectives.
In terms of my approach to teaching, I feel that true learning and progress stems, not from parrot-fashion memorisation (which is still an undeniable aspect of public exams), but from problem solving and dialogue. By memorising an exact question and answer set, you may perform well in an exam but lack adaptability to new situations. This is especially true with the newer (I)GCSE and A-Level syllabuses where the questions are harder, and provide less information which forces you to think laterally and critically. Many schools still struggle with this when trying to cater to many students simultaneously.
My Approach to Teaching and Lesson Structure:
- GCSEs (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths): It is often most helpful if the student is able to come to our session with work that has been difficult or has had errors. No student should be afraid of getting something "wrong" and these errors provide a powerful tool for guiding further progress. This may be in the coursework, homework, practice exam questions, extended pieces of writing etc. It is also important that I know the exam board and syllabus so that the sessions can be as specific as possible.
- A-Levels (Biology): The approach is much the same with GCSEs, but the added difficulty and depth make discussion and problem solving even more effective learning methods.
- University Application Coaching (VetMed, Medicine, Dentistry, Life Sciences): I have experience with helping students apply to a variety of universities and sciences courses. I am proud to say that I have a 100% record of my mentees receiving at least one offer in their chosen discipline. This includes some of the most competitive universities and courses in the country. I offer interview prep./mocks, personal statement advice and editing, tutoring in key areas relevant for the degree and of course any general advice. I am part of an ongoing focus group with my university that has been exploring how to optimise the application process. This is highly relevant to all scientific subjects as the general attitude as to what makes a "good student" is less and less about traditional academic excellence, and now focuses more on soft-skills and informal educational experiences.
Finally I feel that I am a warm and approachable character. Although clichéd, I truly believe that no question is a stupid question. In fact, the most important aspect of learning is looking at the things you don't understand, making mistakes and adapting for new applications.
I am very flexible and, allowing time for session preparation, I am happy to tailor the experience to whatever is desired by the student and/or parent/guardian.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Dan provided me with invaluable support during my Veterinary Medicine interview preparation and I am extremely grateful for all of his help. I would strongly recommend him to anyone preparing for veterinary interviews.
He played a key role in building both my confidence and my interview skills, using structured PowerPoint materials alongside practical tips and guidance. We spent a considerable amount of time practising interview questions, which was incredibly beneficial.
Dan created a supportive and challenging environment that allowed me to refine my answers, improve my communication and think more critically under pressure. His feedback was always constructive, specific and instrumental in helping me progress.
He also provided valuable insights into common interview topics and expectations.
Thanks to Dan's guidance and dedication, I was fortunate to receive offers from three out of four universities for Veterinary Medicine.
I would highly recommend Dan to anyone preparing for veterinary interviews.View more recommendations
