My Teaching Approach & Methodology
My methodology focuses on exam technique and conceptual clarity. I don’t just teach the content; I teach students how to "answer the paper."
H1-Focused Strategy: We focus on the Marking Schemes. I show students how to structure their Significant Relevant Points (SRPs) to maximize marks in the Leaving Cert.
Active Learning: I use retrieval practice and past-exam questions to ensure students are comfortable with the timing and layout of the SEC (State Examinations Commission) papers.
Visual Geography: Leveraging my GIS background, I help students master sketch maps, multi-media interpretation, and the Geographical Investigation (the "project") to secure high percentages before they even walk into the exam hall.
Typical Lesson Format
Duration: Lessons are 60 minutes long.
Structure: We start with a quick check on the previous week’s topic, followed by a deep dive into a specific exam area (e.g., Physical Geography or a History Case Study), and finish by drafting a model answer together.
Experience & Qualifications
I am a fully qualified teacher and the current Head of Humanities in a Dublin secondary school. With over seven years of experience, including teaching in an "Outstanding" rated British International School, I have a deep understanding of different learner types. I hold a BA and MA in Geography from UCD and am currently completing an MSc in GIS and Remote Sensing, ensuring my subject knowledge is at the highest professional level.
Who the Lessons Are For
Junior Cycle (1st–3rd Year): Building strong foundations, particularly for CBAs (Classroom-Based Assessments) and the final exam.
Leaving Certificate (5th–6th Year): Intensive prep for Higher and Ordinary level History and Geography, with a major focus on the Geographical Investigation Report and Document Based Questions (DBQ) in History.
Undergraduate Support: Specialized tutoring for college-level Geography and research skills.
