About Malcolm

Biology is the subject students most often try to survive by memorising, and it's the subject where that strategy fails hardest.

The six-markers, the "explain why" questions, the ones that drop you into an unfamiliar organism or an experiment you've never seen — none of those reward recall. They reward understanding a mechanism well enough to carry it somewhere new. Students who've learned the specification word for word still lose those marks, and it's demoralising, because they genuinely have done the work.

I'm Malcolm, a Neuroscience PhD researcher at the University of Bristol, where I study how astrocytes regulate the brain's response to stress. I hold a First-Class integrated Master's in Neuroscience from Warwick and achieved an A in Biology at A-Level. Before my PhD I spent a year at AstraZeneca in Discovery Sciences doing cell culture, electrophysiology and imaging work — so when a specification mentions membrane transport or receptor binding, I've spent months of my life on the real version of it.

I've tutored for six years, I demonstrate in undergraduate laboratories at Bristol, and at Warwick I was one of 93 student mentors supporting new life sciences students, meeting mentees weekly and turning around their questions within a few hours.

I'm calm, encouraging and genuinely enthusiastic about this subject. If you tell me you find it boring, I'll take that as a challenge.

I teach biology as a set of mechanisms that connect, because that's what makes it stick and it's what the harder questions are testing.

Tell me your exam board and your target grade and I'll work to that specification — the boards differ more than students realise, particularly on required practicals and the depth expected in extended answers.

Topics I cover regularly:

1. Cells, membranes and transport
2. Enzymes, respiration, photosynthesis and the biochemistry students find most abstract
3. The nervous system, synapses and homeostasis — my own research area
4. Genetics, inheritance and gene expression
5. Immunology, disease and the human body systems
6. Ecology, evolution and classification
7. Required practicals and the experimental questions built on them

Alongside the content, we'll work on the things that separate a 6 from an 8: decoding command words, structuring extended responses so the marker can actually find your points, and handling data and graph questions properly. That last one is where a lot of biology students struggle and where my research background is directly useful — interpreting experimental data is my day job.

I won't make you feel slow for asking something twice. We'll go over a topic as many times and in as many different ways as it takes.

The first lesson is free. Send me a topic you've never quite got, and we'll fix it.
