I first began studying American Sign Language in High school, and pursued that passion at California State University Northridge in Los Angeles, majoring in Deaf Studies. I have extensive work experience tutoring students through both volunteer work and private lessons.

ASL is best taught in tandem with an education about the community it exists for. A proper education of ASL requires knowledge of the Deaf Community, and appreciation for the culture therein. Practically, I believe multiple facets of ASL (grammar, syntax, vocabulary mainly) should be developed in students side by side, refined and developed. Linear progression (ie. grammar, then syntax, then vocabulary) is typically relied on for teaching language, but is quite troublesome for a language like ASL. Instead, we start with a foundation of fingerspelling, then incorporate learning grammar and syntax as we learn vocabulary.
