About Eric
I've been teaching college at the collegiate level since 1998. I started tutoring students K-12 in 2009.
Over the years I've learned that great writing isn't about formulas or buzzwords. It's about getting clear on your thoughts and having the guts to put them on the page.
What drew me to teaching English is the fact that almost everything we are usually taught about it is just not true.
I've studied grammar, linguistics, ESL, and TESOL. I know the rules, but I don't worship them as if they are set in stone. The rules (and many English teachers) are like Great and Powerful Oz: loud and authoritative, but behind the curtain lies a long, messy history full of myths and manipulation.
I'm an academic, sure. But not the kind who builds walls between "us" and "them." I care more about truth than tradition, more about connection than credentials. I care about what actually makes sense, not about assigning work that serves no purpose in your real life.
How we use words shapes how others see us, and more importantly, how we see ourselves. The tools of eloquence aren't reserved for the elite. They're the shared inheritance of anyone willing to learn them.
What I bring to the table: I hold a Master's degree in English and Linguistics from Kent State University. I am also a published author, so I don't just teach writing from the outside looking in. I do the work too.
I won't give you shortcuts or fluff. There aren't any. What I will do is help you figure out what you want to say and how to say it like you mean it.
If you're ready to do the work, I'm here to guide the process.
(And if you read this whole thing without skimming? You're either a rare breed... or just really, really ready.)

No two students start from the same place, and people respond to different rhythms, different challenges, and different styles of learning. That's why I ask questions. Not just about writing or grammar, but about you. How you think. How you learn. What frustrates you and what lights you up. It's all connected.
I start by finding out where you are and what you already know, then build from there. Lesson plans, goals, and feedback are shaped around you, not some generic checklist.
I'll also be honest with you: a lot of what you've been taught about English may not be entirely true. Classrooms often spend more time drilling rules than exploring meaning. They reward formulas over clarity, and saying what teachers want to hear over saying what you actually mean.
My job isn't to gatekeep grammar or academia. It's to help you understand how language works and how you can use it to think, express, and connect.
