I teach writing skills with the 'model' approach.
That is, extracting a structure from an existing essay and applying it to our own writing.
I teach pronunciation by drilling. I believe we have an active and passive vocabulary.
There are words we understand and can use in speaking (active).
Then, there are words we know but we don't use them in speaking - we just understand them when he hear them or read them (passive).
In order to transfer vocabulary from the passive to the active we must practice saying them - simple but effective.
For example: we may understand what 'exemplary' means but we never use it. In order to say it we must put it in a sentence and practice saying it several times.
This is how to widen our active vocabulary.
