About Jack

I've been playing guitar for over 25 years and been teaching for over 14 years, and in that time have taught well over 150 pupils from the age of 4 upwards. In 2014 I gained a First Class (BMus Hons) degree in Music from Bangor University where I specialised in classical guitar performance and songwriting. I also hold an ATCL Recital Diploma in Classical Guitar and Grade 8 with Distinction in Classical Guitar. I'm proud to say I have a 100% pass rate with pupils entered for exams.

Having previously worked as a Teaching Assistant, I am excellent with children, including those with learning difficulties, and hold a DBS certificate.

I have played in several established bands, and have been gigging for over 15 years around the South West, Wales and Mildands.

If you are looking for a highly qualified, friendly, patient and dedicated teacher to support your guitar playing and musical development, you’re in the right place. Whether you are a complete beginner, finally ready to pick up the instrument you've always wanted to learn, or a seasoned player seeking an extra boost of inspiration, I’ll work with you to move your playing forward.

I specialise in classical guitar, and also teach acoustic and electric, across a wide range of genres.

I tailor every lesson to your individual interests or goals - whether you want to work your way up to Grade 8 on classical or electric guitar, strum your way through your favourite songs on acoustic, jam along with mates, write your own songs or nail that Jimi Hendrix solo or Metallica riff.

But we'll go far beyond just learning to play songs. My aim is to give you a deeper understanding of music and help you become a well-rounded, creative and independent musician. I’ll use your interest as a starting point for giving you a thorough grounding in all the fundamentals, but I will also help you to:

Read notation or tab, so you can learn new music for yourself
Sharpen listening skills, enabling you to work out music by ear and play with others
Understand how music really works, through practical theory
Improvise and compose/write songs
Record your own music

As you progress, lessons evolve too — beginning with solid foundations and gradually moving towards deeper interpretation, musicality, and your own unique artistic direction.

After each lesson, I email a detailed recap with clear practice guidance, so you always leave with focus and direction.

If that sounds like the kind of musical journey you’d like to take, I’d love to hear from you!

Jack

Elliot (age 15)
"Thank you for being a really nice and helpful teacher, you helped me improved massively since I started which I am truly grateful for. If it weren’t for your help, I’d still be playing a tune a day on the guitar These past 2 years have been phenomenal learning with you, it seems like only yesterday I started with you. And from that point on, I knew we were going to have a great time. You helped me write my first two songs: Western Side and Fire. You also helped me write more prototypes for future songs: Now You’re Talkin’ , Green Onions and the Processor. And we have learnt heaps more together, I am truly grateful for. Once again thank you for being a genuinely amazing teacher for these past two years, I shall really miss you once you move to Bath."

Fiona (mum) and Finley (aged 11):
"Jack has been teaching our son to play the guitar for 1 year. He is a person of integrity who relates very well to all in our family, especially our son. He is punctual for all lessons, arriving at the house for lessons, and friendly and flexible in arranging lessons to meet the demanding schedule of our household. Jack prepares his lessons very well with a wide variety of activities which develop skills across the guitar's musical range. He sends a written summary of what he has taught, with previously agreed activities, to practice for the next lesson. We highly recommend Jack as a guitar teacher."

Stephen:
"I came to Jack Davies as a mature beginner wanting to learn the Classical Guitar. Jack listened to what I wanted and expected from the lessons and to my amazement, and within what appeared to be a relatively short period of time for learning a musical instrument (approximately 18/24 months) I had worked through two introductory books (Cracknell) and also had worked through several grade books (Trinity) and was able to work on, with confidence, and play grade 4/5 pieces. Jack is a very talented guitar teacher; with a vast wealth of knowledge and experience and enthusiasm; and is 'bursting at the seams' to share all of this. I found the lessons with Jack to be informative, instructional, stimulating and enjoyable, and I would leave each lesson feeling inspired."

Lilla (aged 11):
“I had an amazing time learning to play the guitar. You taught me so much in just two and a half years! Thank you for encouraging me and being so patient. I will really miss you!”
