In advance of the session, I'd appreciate the student letting me know any specific topics they feel unclear about, which I can then focus on. I would then pick out the relevant learning objectives from their exam syllabus, giving me an idea of what they need to know to perform well in exams.
I would then structure the lesson by starting with a review of the content of the topic, and try to build a real, intuitive understanding. During this time, students can ask any questions they want, and go as far back to basics as they need to have a clear view, or even ask deeper questions beyond the course to encourage any personal interests they have. This should take up to 20 minutes.
Following this review, we can then work through some example questions relevant to the topic of choice. If possible, these would be selected from past papers, to ensure the student gets practice at the specific type of questions they will need to be able to answer. Often students can understand the content qualitively, but still struggle to answer questions, so by working through these questions together, they will gain confidence in applying the knowledge they have. This can take up to the end of the session.
Finally, in the last 5 minutes, we can discuss any continued or new areas of uncertainty to focus on in the next session, and I will give the student some (optional!) work to do in the week ahead to cement the progress of the lesson.
