About Sylvain

Hello ;) French native from Paris, passionate (about French and English literature, music, cinema, entrepreneurship, ...), I am currently learning at HARVARD University to lead the teaching/learning industry, with unconventional teaching methods. I have studied a lot in my life and I strongly believe that the best way to learn is to have fun, I strongly believe that the best way to learn is to want to know. My teaching methods are based on my practical experiences and I know how to make people flow. As a long-time learner, I will adapt the sessions and advise you to reach your goals. I offer French courses for both beginners and advanced learners.

COURSE STRUCTURE: I build my lessons through a communicative approach, maximising the use of the target language. My lessons are generally task-based and focused on practical functions. During each lesson, we will always work on four different skills, such as speaking, listening, reading, and writing, using various teaching materials reflecting real-life situations. MY COURSES AIM TO - Improve your listening and speaking skills - Explain grammar rules - Introduce new vocabulary using specific learning methods - Improve your writing, speaking, and listening skills. THE LANGUAGE: I have learnt English and Spanish and am currently learning Italian and Russian. So, I fully understand what it feels like to learn a new language and the difficulties that can be encountered, especially when that language does not use the same alphabet as your native language. EXPERIENCE: I have taught French to people from Europe, the Commonwealth, Russia, Colombia, Mexico, Iran, Sri Lanka, Maldives, South Africa, the USA, Australia, Syria, Lebanon, Algeria, Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, China, and among them were students, teachers, analysts, brokers, nurses, doctors, lawyers, singers, entrepreneurs, writers, investors, bankers, actors, ambassadors, personal trainers, interior designers, architects, TV and film producers. .. My students have attended the following schools: - Prep Schools: Thomas’s Battersea, Wetherby Prep, ... - Secondary Schools: St Paul's Girls' School, St Paul's School, Westminster School, Wetherby, Sevenoaks School, Harrow, Eton College, The American School in London, King's College School, Trinity School, Dulwich College, Waldegrave School... - Universities and business schools: Oxford, Cambridge, University of St Andrews, London Business School, King's College, Imperial College London, University College London, Harvard, Columbia, London School of Economics...

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

French is my native language, as I was born and raised in Paris. Because it is my mother tongue, my fluency is entirely natural, rooted in my cultural origins and everyday life.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

An emblematic representative of French culture is Molière.
As the master of French comedy and satire, his works helped shape the modern French language, and his profound influence on our literary and theatrical heritage remains unmatched.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

I am particularly fond of the expression "esprit d'escalier" (staircase wit).
It refers to that clever comeback or witty remark that you only think of after you have left the conversation. I love it because it captures a very specific, relatable human quirk with a uniquely French charm.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking French matters deeply to me because it is my identity, my culture, and the lens through which I experience the world. Passing it on to others allows me to share the beauty, nuance, and rich history of French thought with people from all walks of life.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

The trickiest part of learning French is often the gap between written and spoken forms—specifically, silent letters, liaison rules, and mastering complex verb conjugations. But regular, natural conversation paired with cultural immersion is the ultimate remedy. Breaking down grammar into logical patterns and encouraging students to speak without fear of mistakes dramatically accelerates progress.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

Back when I was in school in France, dictations (dictées) were a weekly ritual that terrified everyone in the classroom. While they felt punishing at the time, struggling through those complex orthographic rules taught me a meticulous attention to detail that I now use every day to help my own students master written French.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Moving to and living in London has given me a fascinating external perspective on my own language. Explaining French grammar structures, idioms, and cultural subtleties to English speakers has deepened my analytical understanding of French, turning native intuition into structured, effective teaching methods.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

What makes me an effective tutor is my combination of native authenticity and tailored pedagogy. Living in a vibrant, multicultural hub like London has taught me how to adapt to learners from diverse backgrounds, turning structured lessons into engaging, confidence-building experiences tailored to each student's goals.
