About Youngju
I have been a teacher all my life, my father was a teacher, as well as two of my sisters. This is important: you could say I was born into this profession. I am very fastidious in what I do in lesson preparation, the teaching event itself and the following through on my students' goals and progress. This is not a sideline for me. I attended teacher's college in Jeonju, South Korea, and then went on to Seoul University for my Master's (a very tough school to get into, if I may say). And I have taught every kind of student you can imagine, across the divides of country and culture. I am fun and I am serious and dedicated. Finally, I KNOW my language in all of its idiosyncrasies and nuances, and I can make the language connection between English and Korean so that you understand the one's meanings in the other. Whether you are pursuing an academic interest or want to communicate with your Korean family and friends better, have business needs, or are simply planning to visit Korea---Are you a K-POP fan? Or maybe you just want to try something new for the fun of it. I have been there many times and I know how to draw up a lesson plan just for you, and I know how to do this having taught over two hundred students online since moving to the US ten years ago. It can be as rigorous as you like or as casual as you like. It can include a very disciplined grammatical focus, or if you just a want working knowledge to get around and speak, I can accommodate.
On the subject of the text and the lesson: If you are interested in a long term program of study, I have a text that is very good, or, if you have a text you are familiar with we can use it. So, for the serious student, I am there for you! If you're into K-POP or K-dramas, we can study with these. Finally, if you have a special occasion coming up, a trip or a business meeting, or whatever, I can prepare a text just for your specific needs.
Generally, we will greet one another, a little small talk, then review of the previous class material. Then we move on to the day's lesson. It can be vocabulary, grammar, and practicing these in drills and conversation. The lesson can include speaking, reading, writing and listening, but you can tell me if you don't want all of this. Just let me know, and I can tailor the lesson as you like. When we wrap up the class, I can give you homework. Yes, I know: Homework!? Nobody likes homework. What can I say, I am a teacher! And the more you study your lessons, the more progress you will make. We will make it happen together.
Also, you can record the lesson and review any time. It's a very good idea to do this!
What sets me apart from others is, first, my many years of doing this, and I have loved every minute of it. I don't get tired or impatient and I stay with you until you work out the lesson. This is my profession. Another thing that sets me apart is that as our lessons proceed, I am constantly checking your status and progress through homework, which is given (and can be very demanding if you want this!) and reviewed and discussed.
I have many students who have gone on to major in Korean in college. I also have students who simply love the language and love to speak with me to keep up their skills and familiarity. I have had students as young as ten, and as old as seventy. I would love to welcome you!
