About Steve
I perform as a professional percussionist with a particular interest in timpani and tuned percussion. I have been a regular contributor to groups such as Leeds Baroque, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and silent movie ensemble Harmonie Band.
I am also a professional singer and former university music professor based in Wakefield, working all over Yorkshire and the North. I am a trained classical tenor, experienced in a range of different music styles including musical theatre.
I taught conducting at university level for 20 years and enjoy leading both choirs and orchestras. I am currently in the process of conducting and recording the complete choral works of Hans Gál for Toccata Classics.
I have undergraduate and doctoral degrees in Music and Russian and received teaching and research awards whilst working as a music professor at Leeds University (where I supervised more than 500 dissertations!).
In addition to classical music, I am an MD for musical theatre and have conducted shows as varied as West Side Story, Guys & Dolls, Annie, The Full Monty, and many more besides.
As a performer I have appeared in prestigious venues around the world, including London’s Southbank and Wigmore Hall; Sydney’s Verbrugghen Hall; and Cape Town’s City Hall.
I was born in Zambia and spent the first six years of my life surrounded by a mixture of local Bemba and Ngoni tribal music, the Anglican choral and organ music played by my mother at the local church, my brother’s Supertramp and Genesis albums, and my father’s Bach-dominated record collection. On the rare occasions that I’m not singing/playing/directing music, I enjoy cooking, fine wines, and playing with our family’s ‘mischief’ (group) of domesticated rats, all of whom bear the middle names of composers!

So, what do you want to learn?!
You might want to progress through formal graded exams and diplomas, enter that music competition you’ve had your eyes on for ages, or impress your friends at your next rehearsal. MY goal is to help you achieve YOUR goals in a relaxed and enjoyable environment, providing you with the technical and musical tools necessary to achieve your potential.
In your first lesson we’ll talk through your hopes, preferences, even your fears around percussion, singing, conducting, or academic work. We’ll try out a few practical exercises, and together we can work out the optimum approach for your musical development. I don’t judge; I encourage and nurture.
If this sounds like the kind of thing you are looking for, get in touch through this website and we’ll speak soon.

Perfect! It was very good and Mr Steve helped me improve a bunch even on the first lesson, The atmosphere was also very friendly and welcoming. Good technique, thank you
- Great first lesson! Really enjoyed it, and I sensed that you did too :-)Steve's response :
To recap, we talked a bit about your musical experience, what type of music you like, etc. You’re interested in learning drumming broadly, and not limited to specific styles at present. There’s always scope for specialising later down the line, and the basic principles and techniques are the same for nearly all drum/percussion playing.
Although you don’t read music yet, I don’t think you’ll find it too difficult to pick up as we go along - you’re already thinking musically and rhythmically, which is a great start.
We did some gentle warmups, and it’s really important to do that every time before you play. I can recommend some specific exercises if you need.
You picked up the basic grip quickly. Just be careful to have your palms facing down, and really focus on getting your left hand as even as possible compared with your right. When you do exercises, alternate starting with different hands so that you don’t get stuck in a routine of convenience!
We worked up speed on the “single stroke roll”; did some bass drum work (you managed to combine hand and foot well!); and finally introduced the “buzz roll”, which we’ll eventually cover, I’m sure.
Very well done on such a good start, and hopefully see you again soon.

I have known Steve for over 20 years as a colleague. He is an experienced and talented educator, as well as an exceptional and multi-skilled musician, with 25 years' experience of tutoring and coaching university students in the area of performance. He has been a great support to me as a singer, and has coached me on numerous performances over the years, assisting me with vocal technique, expression and pronunciation in several different languages. As well as being a singer and percussionist he is also an experienced conductor of choirs, orchestras (and other instrumental ensembles), musical theatre productions and opera.
I met Steve singing in Leeds Baroque Choir and from there we together founded Leodis Consort, which is already a successfully stabilised choir in the Leeds city and region. With decades of experience in research and teaching, playing and singing, Steve has the knowledge and ability to create a kind and adaptable environment.
I have known Steve for over 20 years (we have been colleagues at a leading music education institution), and can vouch for his exceptional musicianship and teaching ability. He is vastly experienced as a singer, percussionist and conductor and a thoroughly nice bloke to boot! Learning and laughter will be found in equal measure!
I strongly recommend Steve as a tutor. I have known Steve for more than 25 years, including, for a 3-year period, as colleagues in Higher Education. Steve's academic credentials are excellent, and, like me, he balances this with work as a conductor, singer, and percussionist, in which he also excels. Steve is a very good and accessible communicator in practical and theoretical musical contexts, and I am very happy to recommend him!
