About Liam

I trained at Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts - the oldest drama school in the country - graduating with a First in Acting in 2017.
I didn’t start with the voice I have now.

I grew up in Yorkshire with a strong northern twang and weak articulation. In my audition for drama school, I was asked to repeat my speech because they couldn’t understand a word of it. That moment made something very clear: whatever talent I had, my voice was holding me back.

Once accepted, I was told directly that I would never work at the highest level without a highly accurate RP accent and elite articulation.
So I trained.

At drama school I learned phonetics, RP, and the physical mechanics of speech properly. I practised obsessively. When I went home during term breaks, friends would ask, “Why do you sound so posh?” or “Why are you changing your accent?”

What I know now - and what saves my clients years of frustration - is that accent change isn’t about identity at all.

The voice is a wind instrument, not a personality trait. When it’s used efficiently: without trapped airflow, strain, or tension; clarity, authority, and control emerge naturally.

For years I felt linguistically out of place: too northern in the south, not northern enough back home. Over time, that disappeared. What remained was my own voice; precise when I need it to be, relaxed when I don’t.

Today, I don’t think about changing my voice. I think about expanding it.
I focus on impact: how sound guides attention, how breath synchronises with thought, and how learned precision creates authority without effort.

I began coaching in 2019 while still performing as an actor in London, before returning to Yorkshire in 2020 to coach full-time online and refine this craft.

Since then, I’ve coached hundreds of people across thousands of lessons in RP pronunciation, elocution, accent shifting, and public speaking each year.

I’ve competed at Toastmasters Nationals (2024) and invested heavily in advanced communication and public speaking training. Everything I teach draws directly from this combined theatrical, professional, and coaching background.

Speechsmithy exists to close the gap between fluent English and authoritative English — helping capable professionals develop a voice that signals clarity, intelligence, and credibility without sacrificing individuality or authenticity.

So you can stop competing to be heard, communicate with ease, and focus on what matters most: excellence in your field.

That is what is I mean in becoming a Speechsmith in your own right: Someone capable of finding and forging the neuron pathways they need to match their communication skills with their ability to operate in the highest echelon in their chosen arena.

Many people try to change their accent by copying sounds.
That usually produces a voice that feels fake, effortful, or unstable.
My approach is different.

The goal isn’t to put on an accent;
it’s to build an English voice that feels natural, stable, and technically precise.

THE REAL OBSTACLE:

When you learned your first language, you trained a specific set of mouth positions and movement patterns.

When you speak English, you’re often still using those same positions - including breath control and vocal fold activation - even though English requires a different physical setup.

That mismatch is the root cause of most accent issues.
In practice, the problem isn’t the accent itself.

It’s the gap between the sound you intend and the sound the listener receives.

When pronunciation is imprecise, the listener’s brain works harder to decode the signal. Their attention strains, then fades and finally disengages, especially in noisy environments, fast speech, or complex discussions.

English ears are particularly intolerant of this extra cognitive load.

The aim of this training is to remove that strain entirely; so your listener can relax and receive your words effortlessly, while you focus fully on meaning and impact.

English RP contains 44 phonemes.

In our work, I identify exactly where your accent differs and teach the precise positions of the tongue, lips, jaw, breath, and vocal folds needed to produce each sound accurately.

WHY ACCENTS OFTEN SOUND “FAKE”:

Most people attempt accent change through imitation.
Without correcting the underlying mechanics, this creates a voice that feels artificial and collapses under pressure.

Lasting change happens only when correct positions are trained into muscle memory.

With short, precise daily practice, new patterns begin to run automatically, without constant monitoring or strain.

RHYTHM & FLOW:

Pronunciation alone isn’t enough.
English has a distinct rhythm and musicality: smoother, more legato, with specific transitions between sounds.

We train not only individual phonemes, but how the mouth moves between them; so your speech sounds fluent and continuous, not assembled.

SPELLING vs SOUND:
English spelling is famously inconsistent.
That’s why we cover every common spelling variation for each phoneme, so unfamiliar words never catch you out.

Example:
The “ah” vowel appears in heart, bath, castle, clerk, target market, marginal advantage, and many more.

You learn to recognise the sound, regardless of spelling.

WORKPLACE & PROFESSIONAL VOCABULARY:

If your focus is professional English, we prioritise business and workplace language so what you train can be applied immediately in meetings, presentations, and calls.

FAQs
How soon will I notice a difference?
Most clients feel clear physical changes within weeks. Others typically notice audible improvement within 6–12 weeks with consistent practice.

How long to a perfect accent?
A fully native-level accent takes time — often a year or more. Professional clarity and authority improve much sooner.

How many lessons do I need?
Around five sessions establish strong foundations. Ten improve linking and fine detail. Fifteen to twenty typically create self-sufficiency.

Do you teach grammar?
No. This training focuses on pronunciation, phonetics, and voice mechanics.

My accent is very strong — is that a problem?
No. Accent change is physical, not talent-based. Progress depends on training quality and consistency, not origin. I’ve worked with clients from:
India, Brazil, Portugal, Italy, Spain, Bulgaria, Latvia, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Romania, USA, Guinea, Zimbabwe, Thailand, Philippines, Hong Kong, Ireland, Scotland, Russia, Hungary, Mexico, Belgium, China, England, and more.

How much practice do I need per day?
Five to ten minutes twice a day produces exceptional results. Short, focused practice beats long, unfocused sessions.

I’m older — can I still change my accent?
Yes. With correct practice designed for neuroplasticity, meaningful change is possible at any age.

Closing
There’s a reason the English RP accent is associated with clarity, trust, and authority.
But changing the voice alone is difficult — and often confusing — without expert guidance.
