About James
I originally studied biology, chemistry, and math's at A level, before completing a master's in chemistry with a year in industry at the University of York. This gave me an excellent wide-ranging background to core knowledge and how it is used in context. Currently, my PhD is based on the science behind many consumer goods used today, such as toothpaste and shampoo.
I have experience demonstrating, teaching, and supervising practical sessions, as well as marking university undergraduate work. In each case complex scenarios must be broken down into core components in order to be understood. I have also run practical science sessions in primary schools, bridging the gap between knowledge and fun. I can use this experience to help teach and understand any level of science.

Hi, I’m James, a final year physical chemistry PhD student. I have lots of experience dealing with real-world science, and how it can be used for our benefit. As your tutor, I will be able to bring real-world examples and make science and math's relatable and understandable!
I generally like to use example problems to explore a topic, but love discussions and questions, and will always try to relate to real world examples where possible. However, my teaching style is adaptable and can work to an individual's strengths to bring out the best grade possible.

I worked in the same research group as James during his PhD and we have kept in touch ever since. He was always very engaging when giving presentations and teaching the younger students. James has broad knowledge and great enthusiasm about many topics in science, which makes him an ideal tutor.
I have previously been tutored by James on chemistry and mathematics. I think James is a wonderful teacher. He is full of enthusiasm and passion for science, which means that his lessons are creative, energetic and fun! I honestly could never think I would enjoy learning maths (my weakest and most hated subject) as much as I did when tutored by James. He manages to make it interesting, relevant to real life problems, and, by taking a step-by-step approach, easy to understand. I would honestly recommend him to anyone, especially those who struggle with science or find it boring.
