About Alaina
I am currently a rising sophomore at the University of Southern California, studying film and television. Pop culture is a passion of mine, which allows me to relate heavily to most youth. I have also been a camp counselor and circus coach for the past 5 years, and a lifeguard for 3. I have extensive experience working with children and it has always been a passion of mine that I hope to continue after graduation. As a young professional, I do whatever I can to be communicative and responsible while I continue to network and make connections.

English is all about creativity and I strive to help my students extrapolate their personal experiences and apply them to text. Unlike math or science, English is interpretative and I will push my students to think critically about words and their power.
I will begin lessons with a check-in to see each week where my student is and how they are feeling about their lesson. I will then explain literary concepts (figurative language, grammar, types of poetry, etc.) and show them examples. It is important to me that my students will not only understand how literary devices work, but how they show up in their everyday lives.
My lessons will take a personal approach that involves each individual student's personality and interests. I will ensure that I focus on areas where they are struggling and adhere each lesson plan to their needs. I'll come prepared with a PowerPoint each week to explain concepts and will find fun exercises to do with each student.
I work best with younger students (4-14) and am especially passionate about helping children in typically under-resourced neighborhoods in Chicago. I am based in the North Side but have access to a car and am incredibly comfortable with the CTA.
