I had to take prerequisite classes for math when I first got into college. It's a pre-developmental class that some students have to take before they can sit for their credit level classes. The first thing they made us do in class was to write a letter to them about my relationship with math. My letter started with the sentence "I hated math all my life because it never allowed me to be creative." Fast forward to 4 months after writing that, I am in love with math and how creative I can be with teaching it to my students at that same program that hired me as a math tutor. I like to walk them through their math problems by asking them questions instead of explaining everything to them. Almost in a sense that they're answering their own questions. I also believe wording is important. For example, students find it hard to believe how 0.50 x 0.50 is 0.25. I would ask them something like - "What's half of half?" If they're still confused, I'd ask - "What's half of a dollar?" Then they would say 50 cents. And then I'd ask - "What's half of 50 cents?" - "25 cents AKA 0.25!!!" WHOLA! I am comfortable teaching pre-college level algebra to high school students or below. I would also love to teach kids from all grades until high school basic math with a fun-friendly attitude.
