About Laura
I've taught ages 6 months to 25 years old and have worked at 3 excellent swimming schools that have sharpened my skills to individualize each lesson and set my students up for success. I have experience teaching children with ASD.
I've been teaching swimming for 4+ years and I can teach you how to swim and see the relaxation possibilities of swimming and reverse bad or unhealthy swimming habits to make swimming easier, more effective and efficient.
I have certifications in CPR/First Aid and lifeguarding, I was a Red Cross certified water safety instructor for 3 years, and am trained in Lenny Krayzelburg and Big Blue Swim School Curriculum as well as Red Cross.
I am truly passionate about swimming and thoroughly believe everyone should know how to swim because it's a survival skill that can boost your confidence, is the best whole body exercise, and if done correctly can be extremely relaxing and therapeutic.
Everything! I love swimming and I love to pass on my love of swimming to my students. I Iove teaching and watching the light in the eyes or smile of a student who finally gets something they've been working at to get. I love hearing that my lessons have somehow helped them outside the pool to do things they didn't think they could or helped them change the way they thought of challenges. Most importantly I love knowing that what I'm teaching is important both in water and out.
I loved swimming since about 3 years old and when I got old enough to lifeguard I did and I noticed so many people would come to the pool but couldn't swim or were swimming so inefficiently.I the college I was at offered the water safety instructor class to learn how to teach swimming and I joined for that class so I could become an instructor in addition to lifeguarding. I fell in love with it in my first class of 10, 6 year olds despite feeling like the 1/2 hour lasted 5 because it was just so much fun watching them conquer new concepts and practice new skills through games. I learned early on kids under 6 should not be in a group of more than 3 nor should they be required to swim longer than 1/2 hours because their attention span is so often short.
I have worked at a Red Cross swimming program, the Lenny Krayzelburg program and Big Blue Swim School teaching swimming over the last 4+ years. I have been a certified water safety instructor with Red Cross for 3 years and have been certified in First Aid/Lifeguarding for over 5+ years.

Fist I find out what their or their guardians goal(s) is for the lessons so I can make sure I'm the right instructor for them. I also find out, if they know, what kind of learner they are so I know to effectively teach them. Then I see what they can do in the water and based on what they struggle with or are not doing efficiently for the goal(s) I teach from there.
I only start at the bare basics if they have absolutely no experience. If they are afraid of water we start out of the water with just our feet in for the first lesson working our way into the water by the end. If there is time left over we will begin the basics.
My speed depends on the student and their limitations. I will encourage and push my students to do more but I will listen to their feedback if it's something they aren't ready for and break something down into baby steps to make it easier.
Varied types, Ages ranging from 6 months old to about 25-30. Students with learning disabilities, with ADHD, with ASD, that are athletic, that are overweight, who are terrified, who have no fear of water, with behavioral issues, that are blind, that are deaf, who suffer from anxiety, that have trauma, who speak another language, and that have missing limbs.
Find someone you're comfortable with. Don't be afraid to shop around because you have to trust your instructor to learn from them and that is earned. Do not go with someone only because they are cheap or only because they have certifications. I have taught with many really bad instructions who had more training then I did but got much less results.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are you really trying to learn? How to not drown or how to swim or even more specific how to swim efficiently or swim fast.
How do you learn? Are you better at being shown stuff, be verbally told, or doing it yourself?
Do you have a deadline? That changes how often or what you'll need to work on to acheive it.
Do you need external motivation? Would it be helpful for the teacher to remind you? Would you prefer more praise than critique until you're confident? Or be required to pay for bulk classes in advance so you're more likely to come?
Are you willing to practice outside of class, even if it's just on the floor of your living room? Some movements are not natural yet and practicing may be helpful. Do you want to be given exercises to practice?
