About Sarah
I have been teaching voice for more than 30 years to everyone from beginners with no musical or singing experience to professional singers. I am most passionate about helping my students understand the "how" of singing and work a great deal on vocal technique. Songs are taught as a way of practicing and solidify this technique and in conjuction with my students interests and needs. This method of teaching has been excellent for my students because they have remained vocal healthy, they have been able to apply this technique to many different styles of singing, and they sing in-tune! Even though I am now at an age when many folks have stopped singing I still perform solo and in choruses which I believe can be credited to my strong technique.
Teaching Experience
Private Voice Teacher since 1986 in Savannah, GA, Victoria, BC, East Brunswick, NJ, Tustin, CA, and Ann Arbor, MI. Faculty, Victoria Conservatory of Music 2010-2016., Collegium teacher 2011-12. Faculty, Canadian College of the Performing Arts 2012-2016. Taught students with a wide range of ages, musical/vocal ability and interests from those with no musical experience to professional singers. Taught professional cantors both Catholic and Jewish. Teaching emphasis on vocal technique, repertoire, diction, understanding and communication of texts and musicality. Students are prepared for professional, community and school music theatre auditions and performances, private and school sponsored competitions, college entrance auditions, school chorus entrance/placement auditions, professional and amateur chorus tryouts and studio recitals. Vocal Instructor for the All American Boys Chorus, teaching group classes and coaching soloists. Vocal teacher for Opera Pacific’s summer Opera Camp. Substitute teacher in the Ann Arbor Public Schools for elementary, middle and high school vocal classes. Extensive knowledge of operatic, classical song, and music theatre repertoire. Member of NATS.

Performing Experience
Operatic roles performed include Adina in L’Elisir d’Amore, Birdie in Blitzstein's Regina, Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, Anne in The Merry Wives of Windsor, Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte, Olympia in the Tales of Hoffman. Companies include Western Opera Theater (touring arm of the San Francisco Opera), Encompass Theater, Bel Canto Opera, Liederkranz Opera, Opera Ensemble of New York. Associate chorus, New York City Opera; three Live from Lincoln Center telecasts 1981-1986. Extra Chorus, Metropolitan Opera Les Troyens. Solo recitals: 92nd St. YMHA, New York; Kerrytown Concert House, Ann Arbor; St. Mathias Church, Victoria, BC, June 2016. Member Harmonium Choral Society while in New Jersey. In Victoria, performed Messiah and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio with Vox Humana and the Victoria Symphony, performed Britten War Requiem with the Victoria Choral Society and the Victoria Symphony. In Savannah, soprano section leader, First Presbyterian Church. Music theatre in summer stock and college.

I have a degree in Music Education with a concentration in voice from the Univeristy of NC at Greensboro and have additional graduate training at the Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music. I am a member of NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) whose workshops I have attended and publication I read to further my own education. I have also attended master-teacher, David Jones master-class for teachers, read his blog posts, and will be attending another of his workshops in January 2018.

The first lesson is normally spent getting to know the students, their needs and interests, and current understanding of singing, and listening to them vocalize and sing to assess their needs. I then explain breathing and singing anatomy. Finally I share a sheet of appropriate vocal exercises and assign a song to work or help them with a piece of music they have brought.

Details
My pricing varies somwhat depending on the age of the student and the length of their lessons. I will on occassion do some needs-based pricing.
Generally: $40/half-hour, $55 for 45 minutes, $65/hour.
