About TOM
Experience and knowledge are the first requirements for this profession, but ability to communicate and patience are a close second. If an instructor cannot be patient in their training, and LISTEN to students, the student will not grow and neither will the instructor’s business.
I have 35 year’s experience in this industry and 23 years as the Sales and Marketing Director for a major firearms manufacturer. I am a decorated Infantry combat veteran from Desert Storm, a Certified Range Safety Officer and Armorer by the United States Army. While the majority of my training has come through the Army, I recognize that the experience of personal and home defense is a realm that requires greater consideration, more stringent training, and a mind-set that works in a civilian setting.
An instructor with this much real world and government training and experience typically comes at a much greater price tag. I keep my rates fair and my training honest and true to the cause of the Second Amendment and our liberties as honest Americans because this nation is a safer place when all its citizens are well trained with firearms.
Few things are more rewarding then empowering citizens with the ability to safely and securely protect their homes and family. Our lives are precious and our homes are our castles, you have every right to use your God given and Constitutionally enumerated Rights to protect them.
Do I do this to help supplement my income? You bet I do. Capitalism is the key to freedom and prosperity. But no more satisfaction can be gained doing this work, then seeing the smiles on the faces of successful students who go home knowing that they are safer, and more secure then when they came.
Natural extension of what friends and family have been coming to me for many years for.
I have always enjoyed public speaking and enriching others with new understanding from my experience. Talking about guns and shooting leads to people wanting to experience guns and shooting. I love my history in this industry and cherish the education and experience it has given me. Sharing that is the least I can do.

New students are clay pots to be molded. I’d rather train a complete novice then a student who already has bad habits that need to be broken.
Before we do anything, we establish a base line of topical knowledge. We review what the student knows and doesn’t know. We cover firearms safety, firearms basics, and then move on the specifics about the student firearms. We do not move into live firing until both student and instructor are satisfied that the basic knowledge exists to do so safely.
All types from complete novice to long time users. Any level of education or understanding is acceptable.
Look for tenure. It's easy to get "credentials" on paper, but being experienced only comes with age and - well, experience. Doing that which you have become good at, over and over and over. not just for weeks or months, but for YEARS. Experience is not experienced.
Look for well rounded credentials from different areas (both civilian and military/LEO), and humility.Ego has no place on the firing line.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are your end goals? Is this training for personal and home defense? Is it for more? Where do you see yourself in the use of firearms in 3-5 years? Also, consider your role in the home. Are you a parent, or a son or daughter? Are you living at home, or out on your own? Do you have roommates? Do you have frequent visitors? All these things should be considered when deciding what areas you need to consider when taking on the responsibility of being a firearms owner.
