About Joyce
My passion for sewing began at an early age. I would go into my mother’s sewing bin and found all kinds of treasures; rhinestone buttons, gold braided ric rac and beautiful fabrics. I started creating dresses for my Betsy McCall doll. I made her various outfits and her beach holiday wear. I continued sewing from hand work to embroidery, cross stitch, rug crochet, etc. My love for sewing surpassed and I created a majority of my clothes from Jr high thru high school and college. I designed my wedding gown, christening gowns, quilting and the list goes on. I went to college, learned about slopers, croquis etc.
When I retired from being Director of Education for Essilor (largest lens mfg in the world) I decided that I wanted to teach young people the joy and art of sewing. It is so different from when our mothers or grandmothers sewn in one respect but on the other hand it’s not the same. I like to incorporate the old with the new and make unique items. I like to see my students become creative and to let them know if they draw it, they can make it. Teaching in a positive and creative way is my method. Each student is unique, they sew at a pace that is comfortable for them. They are given notebooks and on occasion challenges to induce creativity through fabric and findings. If a student had a strong desire to create costumes for Anime or Comic-Con we can go that direction. If they want to learnhome decor items, tote bags, stuffed animals etc. I c
In teaching, I love to see how excited and proud that my student feels upon creating something they have made themselves. It not only brings happiness to them but also to myself.
Sewing provides me to be in a "happy place", especially now with COVID more than ever. I enjoy designing and creating clothing, costumes or household items for people, it is their personality that is then reflected in what I design or create for my clients. I love being surrounded by like-minded people, fabric, sewing materials, tools, patterns, life it's all around us that we can recreate in art form with sewing or mixed media.
My education consists of hands-on sewing since the age of 7. When I was a pre-teen I used to design my summer tops, shorts and peddle pushers. As a teen I created all my school clothes since I could never find clothes that fit me. I also designed and create all my prom gowns. I always wanted to be a Fashion Designer. However, at that time I was unable to pay for college so I got married instead.
I would sew for other people, make dresses for my mother who was into square dancing at the time. Upon becoming a mom I would make all my children's clothing. etc. When I was 16 yrs I went to work at my future father in laws business. He owned several optical stores. While working there I decided that if I had to work I want to learn everything I can. So I did!!
I have my Masters in Ophthalmic Optics, Advanced Certified Optician, Ophthalmic Surgical Tech. and more. I was in the optical business for over 45 yrs. I was employed by Essilor (largest lens mfg in world) as their Director of Education. I taught over 750 customer service reps, as well as providing CE certificates for ophthalmologists, optometrists, and optician, along with sales reps who covered all the US. I wrote more than 10 courses for CE credentials and provided seminars. I was in the optical business over 45 yrs.
During some of this time I had the ability to go to Long Beach State for Fashion Design & Merchandising, pattern drafting, and so much more. I have designed numerous weddings, proms, dance troupes, high school cheer, various costumes and resort wear. I had a line off my clothing put in a local boutique in Temecula, Ca. I also teach quilting, couture, coustumess, home decor, alterations, and mixed media, besides regular sewing. I just finished the costume for a client who is vying for Mrs Idaho.

About the lesson

Each new student receives a notebook with various projects they will be making. Included will be machine maintanence, info on various needles and the use, thread types, sewing tools, fabrics, etc. First project is a French-seam pillowcase. I provide all the material that will be needed for making the pillowcase (retail approx $17-$20. fabric only). Student learns the use of their sewing machine; such as how to wind a bobbin, how to thread the machine, etc. Learn straight stitching, needle down position, self threader (if applicable), pivoting, bar tack and more. They are then given a mini project to do at home (pin cushion) and share at next lesson.
By this time student will know if this a fit and wants to learn more.
